The Supreme Court on 19 May dismissed the AGR due waiver plea from India's top telecom companies, Vodafone, Airtel, and Tata Teleservices. The apex judiciary also expressed its ‘shock’ at even finding these petitions presented before it.

Vodafone Idea, which owes ₹ 83,400 crore in AGR dues, had sought a waiver on ₹ 45,000 crore comprising interest, penalty, and interest on penalty. Bharti Airtel and its unit Bharti Hexacom sought relief on ₹ 34,745 crore, out of their total AGR liability of ₹ 43,980 crore.

Tata Teleservices’ pivot to enterprise services and Tata Sons’ support are fuelling investor optimism. But with a staggering ₹ 20,000 crore debt load and a decade of losses, the turnaround won’t be easy.
