What this resource does

Industry statistics come from agencies with different definitions, release calendars, revisions, and units. The sourcebook prioritizes official releases and preserves metadata before building a chart or comparison.

A number without its series name, frequency, base period, seasonal treatment, publication date, and revision status is not a finalized research input.

Methodology

  1. Start with official national, regulatory, exchange, and company sources.
  2. Capture series identifier, definition, unit, frequency, coverage, and release calendar.
  3. Store original values and revision vintages before transformation.
  4. Document aggregation, deflation, seasonal adjustment, and missing-data treatment.

How to interpret it

Growth in value can reflect price changes as well as physical output. An index-base change can break a naive long time series.

Company revenue is not automatically an industry-size measure. Listed-company coverage, private participants, imports, and informal activity can differ materially by industry.

Limitations and failure modes

  • Official statistics can be revised.
  • Industry classification systems may not align.
  • Release lags vary by source.
  • Aggregates can hide regional and company dispersion.

Research workflow

  1. Register the official series.
  2. Download a dated vintage.
  3. Validate units and breaks.
  4. Publish transformation notes with outputs.

Questions and answers

Why retain data vintages?

Later revisions can change history. A vintage shows what information was available when a research conclusion was made.

Can listed-company data represent an industry?

Sometimes partially, but coverage must be measured. Private, unlisted, foreign, and informal participants may be missing.
